01Overview

The Drinking Piano is built from recordings of an old upright piano that has the worn, detuned character of an instrument played hard for decades. Soundiron recorded it close to the strings in a small, slightly reflective hall, so the sound is dry and intimate with only a hint of room ambience. The library is a Kontakt instrument, so it runs inside Kontakt and can be loaded in Windows or macOS sessions. It includes both tuned and untuned piano material, along with bench creaks, pedal noises and releases that add realism and texture.

Sound and Character of the Upright Piano

The instrument offers Tuned and Untuned Piano in Sober and Drunk modes, so you can move between a cleaner tone and a more battered one. The developer describes the piano as an original Ivors and Pond upright from the early 20th century, and the recordings capture its mechanical noises alongside the notes. The strings were too corroded to tune safely, so the piano sits a little over a half-step flat. That detuning is part of the sound and is useful if you want a vintage, lo-fi keyboard for period or roots-style material.

The library also includes 34 Ambience patches built from the source content, which can be layered under the piano or used alone for atmospheric beds.

Controls, Arpeggiator and FX Rack

The Kontakt interface gives you multi-layer controls with LFO, filter, glide and arpeggiator sections. The LFO offers selectable shapes, modulation targets, speed, intensity, tempo sync and fade-in time. The arpeggiator has a velocity table and controls for direction, timing, swing, randomization and duration. A key and scale lock keeps notes within chosen scales.

The full FX rack includes convolution reverb with custom rooms, halls, chambers and FX environments. The library also includes 20 sound-designed FX and ambient presets for quick starting points.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What do I need to use The Drinking Piano?

The Drinking Piano requires Kontakt. The full retail version of Native Instruments Kontakt version 4.2.4 or later is needed to use the included .nki instrument presets. The free Kontakt Player does not support this library and will run in demo mode.

Which operating systems and formats does it support?

The Drinking Piano is listed for Windows and macOS and is delivered in Kontakt format. The system requirements call for Windows 7 or higher or Mac OSX 10.7 or higher, a dual-core CPU and 2 GB of RAM.

How is the instrument delivered?

The product is delivered as a download via the Amazon S3 cloud network and requires a broadband internet connection. The installed library takes up 5.44 GB of disk space, and an SATA or SSD drive is recommended.

Is the piano tuned?

No. The developer says the strings were too corroded to tune without risking breakage, so the piano sits a little over a half-step flat. The library includes both tuned and untuned piano material for different needs.
