01Overview

SSL SubGen is built for producers who need more low-end from a source that lacks it. It generates sub-bass content an octave below the input, and its sub-bass generation is designed to blend with the source instrument. The developer positions it for rebuilding bass frequencies in thin or poorly recorded kick and bass guitar tracks, and for generating LFE content for film mixes and sound design.

Best for

Sound Shaping and Saturation Modes

SubGen offers up to four independently configurable sub-bass bands. For each band you set gain, center frequency and width on an interactive graph, and you can solo bands to audition the generated sub-bass on its own.

The saturation section offers three characters. The Bass mode uses 70s transistor-style drive with strong harmonics and aggressive overtones for adding bite. The Kick mode uses 60s and 70s transistor-style drive with lighter harmonics for adding distortion to kicks. The Pre mode emulates a 50s valve pre-amp with smooth, subtle overtones and suits sources other than bass and kick.

A single gain-compensated drive control sets the harmonic amount.

Dynamics, Filters and Mix Control

A built-in compressor includes make-up gain and a gain reduction meter, which the developer describes as a way to add glue and control the generated sub-bass.

Gentle low-pass and high-pass filters let you shape the generated bass or remove unwanted highs. The all-in-one mix control blends any combination of wet and dry signal from one parameter, and it can also be used to dial in parallel compression and punch. Mix lock keeps your chosen mix setting when you switch presets.
