01Overview

Photosounder takes an image-based approach to sound. Each sound is represented as a spectrogram, and you edit that picture with graphical tools to shape the audio. The developer describes it as the first audio editor and synthesizer built entirely around this idea. Its built-in tools include sprays for enhancing, suppressing or erasing features, a Photoshop-style layer system and a harmonics modifier that applies changes to a frequency and its harmonics together.

Image-Based Sound Editing and Synthesis

Photosounder processes sounds from images, so a real sound can be transformed by changing its spectrogram. Noise-based synthesis lets you build original sounds from nothing or resynthesize heavily edited material into a continuous, smooth spectrum.

The analysis uses a logarithmic scale and can vary time and frequency resolution by frequency. Processing runs at 32-bit precision, and a Live Synthesis option in the Options menu gives near-instant results when you edit the image.

Graphical Effects and Workflow

Beyond sprays and layers, Photosounder offers spectrogram operations that range from EQ, compression and denoising to effects such as spectral gating, pitch inversion and spectral quantization. Layer groups and blending modes, including convolution modes, let you combine sources in the image.

Every action is saved to a human-readable history file, so a session can be restored after a crash. You can also edit that history by hand or automate actions with scripting. Images can be exported to BMP for editing in other programs and reimported.
