01Overview

REPLX-1 is built around the lush, dense reverb tails of late-seventies studio racks. Its Decay knob runs from a tight 0.2 seconds to a 30-second wash, and a fader sets the wet and dry balance. Beyond the main controls, the four knobs under the display change function across pages, covering size, diffusion, damping, modulation and a tempo-synced pre-delay. Version 1.2 adds ducking, which steps the reverb back while a vocal or drum part plays and lets it bloom in the gaps.

Sound and character of the digital reverb

Tone Empire describes REPLX-1 as a reverb for records from the late seventies onward, with a dense tail that moves gently rather than ringing. Low frequencies bloom and high frequencies fade the way a real space allows.

The plugin models the converters of the original units as well as the reverb itself. You can run the signal through the gain-ranged 12-bit conversion and lower sample rates of early machines, through a later 18-bit stage, or leave it clean. The choice shifts the result from darker and grainier to wider and more open.

Controls, freeze and ducking

The main workflow sits on the Decay knob and the balance fader. Stepping through the display pages with the < and > controls gives the four knobs new roles, including size and diffusion, bass multiply and crossover, damping, early and late levels, modulation rate, tail shape and a tempo-synced pre-delay.

FREEZE holds the tail that is currently ringing for as long as you keep it engaged, with no new input and no decay. Shape and Spread control how a hall blooms after the note instead of starting at full strength.

With DUCK turned up, the reverb steps back while the vocal or kit is playing. Release sets the recovery time as a note value tied to your song's tempo. Twenty ducked presets and ten ducked drum kits are included.
