01Overview

Neural Q V2 is built to add analog character to mixes through its high and low band boosts and a pre-amp saturation stage. Tone Empire trained its neural network model on real musical material, including vocals, drums, guitars and full mixes, so the plugin aims to reproduce how the original hardware responds to a signal. The developer says the result is more accurate analog behavior than traditional circuit modeling. The plugin is a 64-bit effect with a trial available.

Sound and Character of the Neural Network EQ

Tone Empire says Neural Q captures the dynamic behavior of a vintage German equalizer and a modern solid-state pre-amp. The Hi Band and Lo Band controls each boost or cut in a range of -15 dB to +15 dB, shaped after the original hardware.

The developer describes the top end as sparkly and the bottom end as heavy, and says the plugin is designed to be pushed to extreme settings. The pre-amp section adds saturation that can be set from clean to dirty.

Workflow: Drive, Output and Version 2 Changes

The Pre-Amp Drive control sets how hard the input of the pre-amp section is driven, and more drive means more saturation. The Drive Type selector offers three saturation types: Clean, Medium and Dirty. A Drive On/Off button bypasses or activates the saturation module.

The Output control trims the final signal from -24 dB to 0 dB, and autogain is built into the pre-amp section. Version 2 adds a new AI/ML system, lower CPU usage than version 1, reworked presets, a retrained pre-amp model, more accurate reproduction of the original hardware and a resizing option. Presets in several categories are included as a starting point.
