01Overview

FireChild is a compressor plugin from Tone Empire built around the Vari-Mu design, where vacuum tubes reduce gain directly in the audio path. The developer says the plugin includes four models: three tube versions labeled A, B and C, and a transparent version with no tube coloration. Beyond the vintage models, FireChild adds a sidechain section with high-pass and low-pass filters, sidechain gain and a mix control for blending compressed and uncompressed signal.

Tube Models, Release Modes and Sound Character

The A, B and C models are sampled from real hardware at multiple stages of gain and compression and implemented with dynamic convolution. Tone Empire says the three units differ slightly in their electrical components and tube age, so each model has its own saturation color.

The Bias control adds saturation to all four models. Input Gain, which ranges from -24 dB to +24 dB, can drive the tube models hard without necessarily engaging compression.

FireChild offers six fixed release times, each sampled from four different units. A Knee control shapes the compression curve further. The Range control covers +10 to -30 dB.

Workflow, Sidechain and Routing Controls

The Stereo Link switch toggles between stereo compression and two independent mono channels, and works only on stereo tracks. Threshold sets the compressor point, while VU meters show gain reduction for each channel.

The sidechain section includes gain control plus 24 dB per octave high-pass and low-pass filters, each ranging from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. A sidechain power switch turns the sidechain circuit on or off.

The MIX control blends the processed signal with the dry signal, and the main power switch works well for before-and-after comparisons. Oversampling is available up to 8x, which reduces aliasing but is CPU-heavy.
