01Overview

Replicant 3 is the latest version of Audio Damage's Replicant series, which started with the original Replicant in 2007. The developer rewrote the plugin from the ground up to take advantage of DSP advances made since the first release. It is built around a sequencer that cuts incoming audio into slices and re-triggers them in patterns you define. The plugin runs on Windows and macOS in VST3, AU, AAX and CLAP formats, and a trial is available.

Slicing engine and sequencer control

The REPLICATOR engine now supports an arbitrary number of steps, from 3 to 16 per measure. The SIZE control offers several size modes, from dotted notes through to nontuplets, so you can build rhythms that sit outside a standard grid.

The Event FX section adds an ENVELOPE feature for cross-fading between slices, which smooths transitions when the pattern changes. Manual and MIDI triggers give you non-sequenced control of the slicing engine, which is useful for performing live or playing slices from a keyboard or touchscreen.

Slice effects and the new interface

Replicant 3 keeps the original STUTTER slice effect and adds DELAY, REDUKT and RINGMOD. Together they cover repeats, bit-reduced textures and ring-modulated timbres within the same slicing workflow.

The interface has been redesigned to be easier to understand. A new preset manager stores presets as XML files that work across platforms and plugin formats.
