01Overview

RAW-Kick 2 is the successor to a kick design developed with Dutch hardcore and hardstyle producers. Rob Papen describes its concept as versatile enough for contemporary styles such as EDM, hip hop, R&B, house and drum and bass. The main page gives quick access to the most important parameters, while the advanced panel opens the deeper editing tools, including multi-stage pitch and amp envelopes.

Sound Design and Layer Structure

Each of the three layers can run either a dedicated kick synthesizer model or a sample-based sound. The model mode offers a harmonic waveform draw oscillator, a RAW distortion stage with an XY control, a noise module with white and pink noise, and a filter with 48 modes plus ring modulation and AM modes.

The sample mode loads factory samples or your own WAV or AIFF files. It includes a granular mode with decay controls on the granular length and size parameters, so you can shape how the sample sustains and smears.

Modulation, Effects and Playback

A ribbon controller allows dynamic changes to the sound, with a tempo-based spring-back option and a quantized mode. The mod matrix has eight slots, and the layers can be split by velocity.

FX slots 1 and 2 include 25 distortion types and 17 general effects such as delay and reverb. Pre- and post-EQ stages with four bands and HP/LP filters sit before and after the effects. The master section adds mono, legato and glide play modes.

Presets and Setup

RAW-Kick 2 includes over 1300 presets and over 2100 layer presets, and it is compatible with RAW-Kick presets. A bank manager and a star system help you organize favorites. The interface can be scaled to 100%, 125%, 150% or 200%.
