Pipes is a Kontakt instrument collection by AudioThing, built from samples of cardboard tubes, aluminium spray cans, dreamcatchers and PVC pipes. It includes 34 Kontakt Instruments and 6 Kontakt Multis.
Pipes gathers sampled percussive and resonant sources, from corrugated pipes and beer cans to a long PVC pipe and a vibratone. Each source was manually tuned, since the natural pitch of most objects is unstable. The collection ships as 34 Kontakt Instruments and 6 Kontakt Multis, with 188 samples at 44.1kHz / 24-bit. It requires the full version of Kontakt 4.2.4 or higher.
Most instruments are built from everyday objects: cardboard tubes, aluminium spray cans, dreamcatchers and PVC pipes. AudioThing notes that the pitch of most sources is not stable, so each instrument was tuned by hand to make it playable across the keyboard.
The centerpiece is a sampled wah wah tube, also known as a vibratone. It produces a bell-like tone with a very long release and includes a dedicated control for overtones.
Each instrument uses up to 6 Round Robin samples and up to 3 velocity layers, which helps reduce repetition when playing the same note repeatedly.
The library also includes a few sound-designed patches derived from the original instruments, plus 6 Kontakt Multis that are ready to play without extra setup.
