01Overview

Petroglyph is a stone hand percussion library made from recordings of ancient stone artifacts, including mortars, pestles, grindstones, axe heads and arrow heads. The objects are carved from materials such as obsidian, serpentine, slate, flint and granite. The library captures a range of sounds, from heavy grinding scrapes and thuds to thin, glassy taps and clicks. Soundiron recorded 100 articulations, each with round-robin variations across velocity layers, and the library runs in Kontakt on Windows and macOS.

Sound Character and Articulations

The library is organized into articulation groups. Click articulations offer short, sharp taps, and flam and bounce articulations add rhythmic texture. Hand and finger articulations provide softer contact sounds, while scrape, drag and grind articulations cover the heavier, textured end of the range. Striking articulations deliver the strongest transients. Selected tuned percussion articulations are included for melodic playing.

Soundiron recorded the instruments up close and in stereo in a dry studio using Neumann and Sound Devices hardware, so the samples carry little room sound. That dry recording gives you a clean starting point before you add space with the built-in effects.

Kontakt Controls, Arpeggiator and Effects

The custom Kontakt interface includes attack, release, transient offset, dynamic swelling, filter type selection and a resonant filter sweep. Each control is automation-ready in your host or in Kontakt's standalone mode.

A multi-mode arpeggiator includes a step sequencer for building patterns. The Multi-FX rack contains EQ, filter, phaser, flanger, delay, distortion and amp and speaker simulation. A convolution reverb offers 70 impulses, including cathedrals, churches, chambers, rooms, halls and special effect spaces.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What do I need to use Petroglyph?

Petroglyph requires Native Instruments Kontakt. The NKI instrument presets need the full retail version of Kontakt 5.5 or later, because the free Kontakt Player does not support them.

Which operating systems does Petroglyph support?

Petroglyph runs on Windows 7 or higher and Mac OS X 10.8 or higher. It is available in Standalone and Kontakt formats.

Can I use the samples outside Kontakt?

Yes. The samples are unlocked, uncompressed WAV files that you can use in any software environment that supports WAV, and the sample directories are accessible for customization and mapping.
