01Overview

MultiMod Rack is a virtual effects rack from Waves built around distortion. It combines three of the developer's distortion plugins, Abbey Road Saturator, Berzerk and MDMX, and can swap any slot for autopan, chorus, compressor, delay, distortion or reverb. Frequency splitting, EQ and modulation sit around the effects, so you can control which parts of the signal get distorted and how. The developer describes it as moving from a subtle multiband edge to heavy, aggressive destruction.

Best for

Multiband Distortion Processing and EQ

MultiMod Rack splits the signal into up to three frequency bands, with variable crossovers between them. Each band can run through its own effect chain, so you can distort the low end differently from the mids and highs.

Four fully parametric EQ stages let you sculpt the signal before or within the chain. Each stage offers five response curves. A real-time FFT display shows the crossover points and EQ curves, which helps when you are setting the band edges by eye.

Modulation, Sequencing and MIDI Control

Four modulation sources run either as LFOs or as step sequencers, and you can draw custom LFO shapes and step patterns directly. The input amplitude can also act as a modulation source, so the sound responds to how hard you play or drive the track.

Most parameters are eligible for modulation and support MIDI Learn, which makes it practical to map the rack to hardware controllers for live tweaking.

The stereo rotation and width controls go beyond standard panning, giving you more ways to move the image of the processed signal.

Presets and Starting Points

The rack ships with 221 factory presets and 170 presets from artists the developer describes as award-winning. These give you working starting points across the distortion, modulation and splitting options, and you can adjust any of them from there.
