01Overview

Doppler is built around the Doppler effect, the change in pitch and frequency heard as a sound passes by. Waves positions it as a sound design tool for adding space and motion to effects, and also as a mixing tool for adding movement to elements such as percussion, hi-hats, guitars, synths and background vocals. Its controls let you shape the path of a sweep, and an on-screen display shows how the sound moves through space.

Shaping Movement and Space in Sound Design

Doppler gives you direct control over the track curve, center time, pitch, and start and end points of a movement. Waves says the intuitive display makes it clear how the sound travels, which helps when you are building fly-bys or passing movements across an effect.

The reverb tail generator adds reflections that emulate the surroundings, and Air Damp simulates high-frequency loss as the sound moves away. Sweeps can be triggered as one-shot or continuous events, either manually or by threshold, so movement can follow the audio itself.

Using Doppler on Rhythmic and Mix Elements

Doppler includes a bypass for pitch-shifting, which lets you keep the tempo of rhythmic instruments while still adding motion through the reverb and other processing. This is useful when you want movement on drums, hi-hats or other timed parts without shifting their groove.

The plugin ships with 20 presets for common sound design movements, which give you a starting point before you adjust the curve and timing to suit your track.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What formats does Doppler support?

Doppler is available in VST2, AU and AAX formats.

Which operating systems does Doppler run on?

Doppler runs on Windows and macOS. The listed macOS versions are Monterey 12, Ventura 13, Sonoma 14 and Sequoia 15, and the Windows requirement is Windows 10 or later.

What is the Doppler effect in this plugin?

Doppler applies the pitch and frequency change heard when a sound passes you, such as a car or train moving past. It combines pitch shifts with reverb to create that sense of motion.

Can I keep the tempo of rhythmic parts when using Doppler?

Yes. The pitch-shifting bypass lets you retain tempo with rhythmic instruments.
