01Overview

MDMX Distortion Modules is a distortion plugin from Waves that draws on classic guitar stompbox sounds. Its three tones, screamer, overdrive and fuzz, are offered as virtual modules with more control than the hardware they were inspired by. Waves says the plugin is aimed at more than guitars, with the same tools suited to drums, bass, vocals and synths. Waves also includes a Temperature control for overall warmth and color, along with parallel processing, mid-side options and a set of presets.

Distortion Tones and the Temperature Control

MDMX offers three distortion characters: screamer, overdrive and fuzz. Each gives a different type of grit, from a tighter drive to a heavier, more saturated fuzz.

The Temperature control is the plugin's main tone shaping feature. Waves describes it as a way to dial in overall warmth and color, so you can move the sound from darker and rounder to brighter and edgier without rebuilding the effect chain.

Parallel Processing, Mid-Side and Real-Time Control

MDMX lets you blend distorted and dry signals, so you can layer grit under a clean source rather than replacing it. This is useful when you want to keep the original transient or body of a sound.

With stereo material, you can process the mid or side channels separately, and input level control is available for whichever mode you choose. Almost all parameters support MIDI Learn, which makes it practical to automate or control the effect live. HD mode oversamples the signal to help reduce potential aliasing.
