Drive, saturation and dynamic control
According to Moog, the MF-109S can move from tight, dynamic overdrive and analog-style saturation to smooth compression and expansion. The envelope follower and bipolar drive control let the amount of drive respond to the level of the incoming signal, so the character changes with the playing or the source material.
The effect is built around the drive circuit used in the Moogerfooger plug-ins, which is the main reason Moog gives for its sound.
