01Overview

Adding distortion often flattens a track, washing out attack and decay. Harmonics is built around that problem. It offers five component-modelled distortion characters, high and low cut filters that can sit before or after the distortion stage, and a wet/dry blend for parallel processing. Softube describes its dynamics handling as a new approach: the input is analysed so that transients and detail are preserved even under heavy saturation. Presets by Joe Chiccarelli and Howard Willing are included.

Saturation Character and Dynamic Control

Harmonics centers on two controls. The Amount knob sets how much saturation is applied, and the Character knob shapes the tone or color of the distortion. Across its five distortion models, the plugin is meant to give clearly different results rather than small variations of one sound.

The key claim is Dynamic Transient Control. Softube says the plugin listens to and analyzes the input signal, so that dynamics and detail can be kept or even enhanced after heavy distortion. This is aimed at the common problem of saturation blurring the attack of drums, guitars and other sources.

A THD meter helps with fine adjustment, which is useful when you want subtle harmonic coloration rather than obvious grit.

Workflow, Filters and Parallel Processing

Harmonics includes high and low cut filters that can be placed before or after the distortion. Placing them before the saturation stage lets you limit what gets driven into distortion; placing them after shapes the final tone.

The wet/dry blend knob supports parallel processing, so you can mix the saturated signal back with the dry source. This lets you add harmonic content while keeping the original definition of the track.

Softube's source material suggests use on guitars, vocals, drums, bass and synths, where distortion is often needed to help a sound cut through a mix.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What is Harmonics used for?

Harmonics is a saturation plugin for adding analog-style distortion to tracks such as guitars, vocals, drums, bass and synths. Its Dynamic Transient Control is designed to keep attack and detail from being lost under distortion.

Which formats and operating systems does Harmonics support?

Harmonics is available in VST3, VST2, AU, AAX and RTAS formats, and runs on Windows and macOS. It is a 64-bit plugin. Softube notes that TDM, VENUE and RTAS are no longer supported.

What do I need to use Harmonics?

You need a compatible 64-bit host such as a VST, VST3, AU or AAX DAW, a Softube account and an iLok account. Softube officially tests in Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, Ableton Live, Studio One and Reaper, and recommends VST3. Macs need macOS Big Sur 11 or later, and Windows needs Windows 10 or 11.
