01Overview

The MF-102S is a digital recreation of Moog Music's MF-102 Ring Modulator, a pedal introduced in 1998. The original combined a ring modulator, a voltage-controlled carrier oscillator and a voltage-controlled dual-waveform LFO in one unit. Bob Moog and his team designed it as a descendant of the modular synthesizers, built to process and modulate sources such as guitar, voice and synthesizer. The plugin adds stereo operation, an extended feature set, multiple instances and preset management to that design.

Sound and Character of the MF-102S Ring Modulator

Moog describes the original MF-102 as a source of spaced-out, retro-futuristic tones, and says the MF-102S keeps that character along with the interaction between its parameters. Because the effect is built around a ring modulator and a carrier oscillator, it suits metallic, bell-like and inharmonic colorations of an input signal.

The plugin's controls are modeled on the three functions of the hardware, so the carrier, the LFO and the modulation path can be shaped together rather than as isolated effects.

Workflow, CV Routing and Multiple Instances

Like the Moogerfooger line it belongs to, the MF-102S supports CV interconnectivity. Moog says each Moogerfooger instance can modulate the parameters of any other in your project, and that digital attenuverters on every CV input and side-chain capability add routing control.

All parameters can be automated, and presets can be saved and managed. Because the plugin runs in multiple instances, you can build inter-related effect chains within a single session.
