01Overview

The ML4000 is two plug-ins in one package. The ML1 is a mastering limiter with a brick wall look-ahead design and multiple stages of peak detection. The ML4 is a multi-band processor with a 4-band gate, expander and compressor that feeds into the same limiter algorithm. Together they give you control over the dynamics of a full mix or a single master bus, with the ability to tune how the limiter responds from transparent to aggressive.

Best for

  • Stereo bus mastering
  • Multi-band dynamics control
  • Post-production loudness control

Limiting Character and Control Layout

The ML1 uses multiple stages of limiting to detect and control peaks, with a brick wall look-ahead stage in front of them. The Knee and Mode controls change how the limiter responds, which matters when you move between material that needs a gentle touch and material that needs more force.

The ML4 stage adds a 4-band gate, expander (upward or downward) and compressor. Steep 24 dB/Oct crossover filters limit signal leakage between bands, and the crossover page shows the overall frequency response in real time, with the crossover frequencies adjustable by dragging on the graph. Output ceiling control, large meters and text readouts help you set final output level accurately.

Workflow, Metering and Compatibility

Each band's gate, expander and compressor can be set independently or linked together. The dynamic curves for all three processors are displayed at once in every band, and several real-time metering options let you check signal dynamics as you adjust.

The plugin is available in mono and stereo versions, and includes Real Time Analyzers and analog saturation modeling. McDSP describes its algorithms as zero latency and double precision. Formats are VST3, VST2, AU and AAX, on Windows and macOS.
