01Overview

Materia takes a sample and breaks it into harmonic partials, each with its own frequency, amplitude, phase and envelope. Producers can reshape that spectrum, redraw how individual partials evolve, and then play the result across the keyboard. The developer describes it as a way to keep the character of the original sound or push it into new territory. The analyzed model is saved with the plugin state, so a project or preset can be reopened without the original sample file.

Spectral Editing and Partial Envelopes

Once a sample is analyzed, every partial can be adjusted by hand. You change its frequency ratio, amplitude and phase, then reshape its evolution over time with a 128-point envelope that has editable duration and sustain loop points.

Sync Partial Edits applies the same timing to every partial, which keeps changes consistent across the spectrum. Advanced Analysis gives each partial an independent envelope and sustain loop. Add Empty Partials lets you start from silence and draw new harmonic content.

Because the spectrum is editable at this level, Materia works as a sound design tool as well as a resynthesis tool.

Filter and Effects Section

Materia includes a flexible filter with low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, notch and formant modes. The FX section adds four processors: an algorithmic resonator, a tap echo, a multi-stage phaser and a waveshaper.

The resonator models materials including pipes, plates, glass, wood, stone, gongs, membranes and springs. Pairing it with the partial spectrum gives you a route from a recorded sound to a resonant, physically flavored instrument.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What is Materia?

Materia is an additive re-synthesizer by AudioThing. It analyzes a sample into harmonic partials that you can edit and play polyphonically.

What formats and operating systems does Materia support?

Materia is available in VST3, VST2, AU, AAX and CLAP formats. It runs on Windows and macOS, in 64-bit versions.

What do I need to use Materia?

Materia needs a 2GHz CPU and 4 GB of RAM. On Windows it supports Windows 7 through 11, and on macOS it supports macOS 10.13 through macOS 26, using a Universal 2 binary.

Can I reopen a project without the original sample?

Yes. The analyzed model is stored with the plugin state, so a project or preset can be reopened without the original sample file.
