01Overview

LINpro is designed to sit at the end of a signal chain, just before conversion to a fixed-point format. MAAT presents it as the successor to its earlier LINearise dithering engine, with a revised approach to noise shaping and interface design. Its controls cover dither type, output word length and noise spectrum, so the same tool can be used for CD-quality masters, high-resolution files or multichannel stems. The plugin also includes plots of each noise shape generated by its own dither engine.

Noise shaping and dither types

LINpro offers seven noise shapes, including first, second, third, fifth, eighth and ninth order options. Several are psychoacoustic, and the developer states that the higher-order choices were newly developed for this release.

Dither type is selectable between triangular (TPDF), high-passed triangular and rectangular. Rectangular dither is included for educational or experimental use. Rounding and truncation are both available as the method for reducing word length.

Noise shaping can be bypassed, and automatic blanking is included to prevent background contamination when audio stops.

Word length, workflow and visual feedback

Output can be set to 8, 16 or 24 bits. The 8-bit option lets you hear how a reduced word length sounds before committing to a final format.

LINpro includes four factory presets, and its controls can be customized. Because dithering is the last step in the chain, the plugin should be the final instance on the master bus, just before conversion.

Integrated plots show how each noise shape distributes its noise. MAAT says these are generated by the plugin itself rather than simulated in MATLAB, and they show a -100 dBFS signal preserved after reduction to 16 bits.
