Soundtoys says it recreates the sound of classic analog resonant filters, with smooth sweeps, self-oscillation at high resonance and gritty breakup when driven hard. Analog Filter Sound and Character

FilterFreak models classic resonant filters. Turning the frequency control produces smooth sweeps in the retro synth style, and raising the resonance adds edge. Pushing the resonance far enough can drive the filter into self-oscillation.

Driving the filter hard makes it break up in a gritty way, which Soundtoys describes as similar to hardware. Seven analog saturation styles range from warm or crunchy distortion to pumping compression, so you can dial in anything from subtle coloration to heavy grit.

Rhythm Modes, Modulation and Workflow

Rhythm Mode syncs filter movement to your DAW. With the MIDI switch engaged, you can create auto-wah effects that follow the tempo. You can choose a simple note value such as eighths or sixteenths, pick from a library of pre-made rhythms, or build your own pattern with the Rhythm Editor.

The Groove control adds swing or shuffle to the rhythm. For filter movement that follows the audio, the Envelope and ADSR modes trigger the filter from incoming sound. The Shape Editor lets you design custom LFO shapes.

FilterFreak is two plugins in one. FilterFreak 1 gives you a single filter, and FilterFreak 2 adds a second filter that can run in series or parallel.
