01Overview

This upgrade is for existing owners of FabFilter Volcano 1 or Volcano 2. Volcano 3 brings a redesigned interface, new EQ-type filter shapes and more routing options to the Volcano filter family. Its filters use internal drive and non-linear behavior to add saturation and smoothness, and the modulation section includes 16-step XLFOs, XY controllers, envelope generators, envelope followers and MIDI sources.

Filter Shapes and Sound Character

Volcano 3 contains four filters, each with several shapes. The new bell, low and high shelf, notch and all-pass types use internal drive and non-linearities to create a vintage-sounding EQ-style response.

A per-filter Drive setting adjusts the internal saturation, which widens the range of tones from clean to gritty. The developer also reports improved sound quality for feedback, the filters and internal saturation. Filters can run at 6 dB/oct slope when a gentler response is needed.

Routing, Modulation and Workflow

Filter routing is flexible, with per-channel and mid/side modes, and Level/Pan controls per filter that are useful for parallel setups. The interface was simplified, with a new design for modulation sources and a floating slot panel.

Modulation connections are made by dragging and dropping sources onto targets, and live visualization shows the activity. A High Quality option raises internal oversampling. Undo, redo and A/B switching help with comparing settings.
