01Overview

Simplon is built around two filters that can run in serial or parallel. Each filter has selectable slopes of 12, 24 or 48 dB per octave, and three filter characteristics that shape how much overdrive and resonance the filter produces. According to FabFilter, the filters were designed to stay full and smooth even at high resonance, including self-oscillation. Combined with response and slope settings, the plugin offers up to 27 filter types. The interface centers on a large interactive display where both filter curves can be adjusted separately or together.

Sound Character and Filter Types

Simplon's two filters each offer three filter characteristics, ranging from smooth filters with moderate overdrive to raw, self-oscillating behavior. FabFilter says the filters were designed to be full and smooth, with a raw sound that stays clean rather than harsh or digital at full resonance.

The filters can be set to low-pass, high-pass or band-pass responses with 12, 24 or 48 dB per octave slopes. Used in serial or parallel mode, the two filters give a wide range of tonal shaping within a single plugin.

Workflow, Display and Modulation

The large interactive filter display shows both filter curves, and you can drag them to adjust cutoff and resonance. Knobs work in both vertical and circular drag modes, and Smart Parameter Interpolation smooths parameter transitions.

For movement, Simplon includes a 50-slot modulation matrix with drag-and-drop connections, along with modulation source visualization. The plugin also provides interactive MIDI Learn, undo, redo and A/B switching, and a built-in help file with interactive hints.

Who It Is For

Simplon suits producers who want a filter with aggressive, self-oscillating character and a fast visual workflow. Its 27 filter types and three characteristics per filter cover both subtle tone shaping and heavy, distorted filter effects. The plugin is available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions depending on host and format, and a trial is offered.
