01Overview

Cassette Vibraphone for Kontakt is built around the character of tape. THEPHONOLOOP recorded the vibraphone across its full three-octave range with four dynamic layers, using four different cassette decks, so each deck adds its own coloration to the notes. The instrument is designed for producers who want vintage textures and an organic, slightly imperfect tone rather than a clean, modern vibraphone. It works in Kontakt and includes a one-page interface for quick sound design.

Sound Character and Sample Recording

The instrument was recorded across three octaves with four dynamic layers, and every note in every layer was captured four times. The developer provides real round-robin samples, and the Kontakt version also offers simulated round-robin, which can be switched on for additional variation when repeating notes.

Each note was denoised with a high-quality algorithm to prevent noise from stacking when several notes sound together. Some noise remains in the samples to avoid denoising artifacts. A separate noise knob lets you add tape noise back in and adjust its level independently, with filtering applied, so a five-note chord carries a single noise layer rather than five stacked ones.

The result has lots of small imperfections, which suits producers looking for a vintage, organic vibraphone.

Effects, Workflow and Presets

The Kontakt version includes custom convolution impulses: four spring, four hall and three corridor responses. You can choose whether the reverb and delay sit before or after the insert effects.

The one-page interface keeps sound design fast. The instrument also includes 42 presets to start from, and the developer notes that beyond the cassette vibraphone sound you can create unusual textures with it.

The instrument needs a full version of Kontakt 5.6.6 or higher. It can be loaded in Kontakt Player, but only for a limited time.
