How Ping-Based Delay Compensation Works
ATA is inserted on each track in the mix. The latency of every plugin and outboard insert is then measured using a short burst of audio, called a ping, triggered from the ATA on the master fader.
Based on those measurements, ATA calculates and sets the appropriate delay on each ATA on each track or bus. Mellowmuse says this brings all tracks into alignment and provides the tightest timing possible.
Because the latency is measured directly, the result does not depend on what each plugin reports about itself. That also covers outboard gear connected through hardware inserts.
