01Overview

EQ2V Equalizer is an equalizer plugin from Mellowmuse, designed to recreate the weight and colour of classic hardware EQs. Its saturation is modelled on analogue behaviour and increases with input level and EQ gain, which adds depth and warmth to a mix. The plugin covers low shelf, mid, high shelf and high-pass controls, with a transient softener for percussive material. Processing runs at 64-bit with 4x oversampling.

Best for

  • Warming up drum buses
  • Taming hi-hat peaks
  • Adding weight to vocals
  • Mix bus tonal shaping
  • Cleaning up low end

Sound, Saturation and Transient Control

The EQ2V's analogue-modelled saturation is central to its character. According to the developer, harmonic colouration grows as you push the input or raise EQ gain, so the plugin adds warmth as you boost rather than only shaping frequency balance.

The SofTran transient softener targets signals with sharp peaks, such as snare and hi-hats. The developer suggests it is especially useful after boosting the high end, when those peaks can become harsh.

All equalization and saturation algorithms are oversampled at 4x and processed internally at 64-bit, which the developer presents as a way to keep the top end clear and detailed.

Bands, Controls and Workflow

The EQ2V divides its tonal control into four sections. The low shelf covers 35 Hz to 300 Hz, the mid band runs from 300 Hz to 8.0 kHz, and the high shelf covers 8.0 kHz to 16.0 kHz. A high-pass filter ranges from 0 Hz to 400 Hz.

Each band can be bypassed individually, which makes it easy to compare a single adjustment against the unprocessed signal. A phase switch is also included for handling polarity-related issues when working with multiple sources.

Because the frequency ranges are fixed per section, the EQ2V suits quick corrective and tonal moves on a single track or bus.
