01Overview

Plate reverb produces a diffused, bright sound that differs from the reverb of a real room. Abbey Road Reverb Plates brings four plates from Abbey Road Studios into a single plugin, developed in close collaboration with the studio. Waves says the plates were modeled in detail and validated by Abbey Road. The plugin covers a range from short, snappy tails to large, lush spaces, with variable decay times for each setting.

03In depth

Sound and character of the Abbey Road plates

Waves describes the plates as the reverb heard on many Beatles, Pink Floyd and Radiohead recordings. The developer says the plates bring a bright, present quality to vocals and instruments, while high diffusion helps smooth drums and other percussive sources.

The range runs from short, snappy decays to huge, lush tails, so the same plugin can cover tight room-style effects and long ambient washes.

Controls and workflow

The plugin includes pre-delay, EQ, crosstalk and drive controls. Pre-delay lets you separate the dry signal from the start of the reverb, while EQ and drive shape the tone of the tail.

The plates are modeled on Abbey Road's custom hybrid preamp circuits, which Waves includes in the processing chain. Crosstalk adds a further stereo interaction control for shaping width and character.
