01Overview

Digital Nostalgia is the first expansion pack for VirtualCZ, the phase distortion synth from Plugin Boutique. It contains 64 original presets with a clear old-school character. The developer says the sounds remain useful in current electronic music, and they suggest the pack fits House, minimal techno, 80s-style electronica and retro-inspired hip hop. The collection is for producers who want the distinctive CZ tone without building patches from scratch.

03In depth

What is inside the CZ preset library

The pack's 64 presets are spread across nine categories: 17 basses, 12 leads, 10 pads, 8 plucks, 6 FX, 4 bells, 3 brass, 3 keyboards and 1 string patch.

The bass and lead counts make up nearly half the library, so the pack is a good starting point for low end and melodic lines. The pads and plucks give you chordal and rhythmic material for building arrangements.

Using CZ-style sounds in electronic production

Plugin Boutique describes the presets as having an old-school personality that still works in modern tracks. The developer positions them for house, minimal techno, 80s-inspired electronica and retro-leaning hip hop.

Because every preset runs in VirtualCZ, you can adjust the phase distortion parameters, filters and envelopes to shape each sound further. The presets serve as a starting point rather than a finished sound.
