01Overview

Weiss EQ1 is a software version of the Weiss EQ1 hardware equalizer, which Weiss Engineering released in 1996 and which is widely regarded as a standard for digital mastering EQs. Softube built the plugin as a line-by-line code port of the original algorithms, so presets and settings behave as they do on the hardware. The upgrade version is aimed at customers who already own Weiss EQ MP, while the full version is sold separately.

Sound, Modes and Core Controls

The plugin offers seven full-range bands with a Cut/Boost range of -39 to +18 dB and a Q range of 0.2 to 650. Each band can work as high or low cut, high or low shelving, or peaking. The EQ runs in Minimum Phase, Linear Phase, Dynamic and Dynamic Advanced modes, so one plugin covers surgical corrective work as well as standard tonal shaping.

In Dynamic Advanced mode, Threshold, Attack, Release and Ratio are available on individual bands. Softube states that all seven bands can be set to dynamic operation, whereas the hardware offers four dynamic bands.

Workflow Features and Interface Layouts

Weiss EQ1 includes four user interface layouts. The knob arrangement changes with the active mode, while the parameters stay reachable in every mode. Other workflow options include solo and bypass for individual bands, M/S processing and channel linking.

Sample rates up to 192 kHz are supported, and internal processing is 64-bit. Presets can be recalled manually and sound the same as the hardware snapshots they correspond to.
