01Overview

Trident A-Range recreates one of the most sought-after equalizers in recording history. Only thirteen A-Range consoles were built, and this plug-in is modeled on a specific channel from a studio in Denmark. Softube developed it together with original designer Professor Malcolm Toft, and each component of the circuit is modeled individually. The plug-in is available in VST3, VST2, AU, AAX and RTAS formats for Windows and macOS.

Sound, Character and Saturation

The developer describes the A-Range as a musical instrument rather than a strictly technical tool. Its four bands interact in ways that can produce results beyond what the settings suggest, which is part of its character.

A dedicated Saturation control adds the distortion the console produces when driven hard. Turn it down for a clean signal with lower CPU load, or raise it to bring out the gritty sound of the console working at its limit.

The plug-in is modeled on channel 15 of the Trident A-Range at Sweet Silence Studio 'B', a channel the developer links to lead vocal and guitar recordings on several classic rock albums.

Controls and Workflow

Each channel provides four bands of equalization, plus high pass and low pass filters for removing unwanted low and high frequencies. The Saturation control sits alongside these, so tonal shaping and drive can be adjusted together.

The plug-in is designed to be light on the processor. Softube lists it as very CPU friendly, which matters when running several instances in a session.
