Softube's Weiss DS1-MK3 brings the Weiss digital mastering processor into the DAW. The plugin covers three tasks: de-essing, compression and limiting. Softube describes it as a line-by-line code port of the original hardware rather than an emulation. Sound and Processing Character

Daniel Weiss has endorsed the plugin, and Softube says it is licensed from him. The developer describes the processor as transparent, with a digital compressor that can operate at speeds an analogue unit could not reach.

The de-esser works in stereo or mid-side mode, and you choose the filters and frequency yourself. The compressor offers variable soft-knee settings. Softube says these range from gentle levelling to heavier compression. The limiter section includes the original Weiss algorithm and two newer ones, one of which is designed for true peak limiting.

Workflow, Metering and Presets

The plugin includes advanced metering with a waveform view. Softube says it includes new presets from mastering engineer Bob Katz.

Because it is a plugin, you can run multiple instances on the same mix at no extra cost. This suits mastering sessions that involve several stems or tracks.

The package also includes the Weiss MM-1 Mastering Maximizer, the Weiss Deess plugin and the Weiss Compressor/Limiter plugin.
