01Overview

SSL 4K G is a channel strip plug-in that recreates the sound of the SSL 4000 G console, a desk the developer describes as the final model in the 4000 series. The plug-in is built around detailed circuit modeling of the Pink 292 and Black 242 EQ flavours, the 4000 G dynamics section and the Jensen-modeled mic preamp from the 4000 E series. It runs in VST3, VST2, AU and AAX formats on Windows and macOS, and includes an HQ mode for oversampling.

EQ Flavours and Tone Shaping on the 4K G

The 4K G includes the Pink 292 and Black 242 EQ models. The 292 uses a variable Q design, so smaller boosts and cuts produce broader curves, while the 242 uses constant Q. Solid State Logic notes that the 292 is often used for gentle shaping and the 242 for more precise work.

The HMF and LMF bands can be shifted to the outer ends of the frequency range using the HMF x3 and LMF ÷3 selector switches from the 292. This allows wide or narrow bell curves in the low and high regions, in addition to the standard LF and HF shelves.

Dynamics, Mic Preamp and Saturation

The channel dynamics section is modeled on the 4000 G compressor, which the developer describes as tighter and more refined than earlier 4000-series designs. A Compressor Mix control and make-up gain configuration are included in the advanced settings.

The mic preamp models the Jensen JT-115K-E transformer from the 4000 E series, with adjustable saturation. A Variable Mic Input Impedance control, taken from the FX383 G-Series outboard unit, and output fader VCA modeling add further coloration.

Questions, answered

What formats does SSL 4K G support?

SSL 4K G is available in VST3, VST2, AU and AAX formats. It runs on Windows and macOS and is 64-bit only.

What operating systems are required for SSL 4K G?

The plug-in supports macOS 11 Big Sur through macOS 13 Ventura, including M1 Macs, and Windows 10 or Windows 11 in 64-bit versions.

What is the difference between the Pink 292 and Black 242 EQ?

The Pink 292 uses a variable Q design, so smaller boosts and cuts give broader curves. The Black 242 uses constant Q and is often preferred for more surgical tasks. The 292 shelves also have a steeper response with a corner-frequency overshoot.
