01Overview

Springverb brings the sound of vintage spring reverb into a digital mix. It offers three spring models, from space-age echoes to classic rackmount tanks and the dub-style tank favored by King Tubby and Lee Perry. Adjustable spring quantity, tension, pre-delay and stereo width let you shape the reverb further than many physical units allow. Built-in drive, damping and ducking give you control over how the reverb sits in the mix.

Spring Tones and Character

Springverb offers three spring types. Type A is described as producing famous space-age echoes. Type B is a classic rackmount spring tank. Type C is the go-to choice for dub and was used by King Tubby and Lee Scratch Perry.

Spring quantity lets you blend between single, double and triple springs. More springs add density and complexity to the decay. Spring tension changes the feel: tighter springs travel faster and sound more controlled, while looser springs bring out the bouncing, twangy echoes associated with spring reverb.

The Width control can reduce the reverb to mono, which matches how many spring tanks were wired. It can also be pushed past 100 percent to spread the reverb wider across the stereo field.

Tone Shaping and Mix Control

Spring reverbs tend to emphasize midrange and high frequencies, which can build up quickly in a mix. Springverb includes high and low damping knobs to remove frequencies from the reverb tail. Raising the High knob darkens and roughens the sound, while raising the Low knob reduces muddiness and boom.

The Drive section adds saturation to the input signal, and the To Dry control can replace the dry signal with the saturated version. Ducking reduces the reverb while the input is playing, so a dense tail does not mask the source, then lets the reverb return smoothly.

For inserts, use the Mix knob to set the balance between dry and wet signal. For sends, set Mix fully wet so only the reverb is heard.

Questions, answered

What formats does Springverb support?

Springverb is available in VST3, VST2, AU and AAX formats. It runs on both Windows and macOS, in 64-bit.

What do I need to run Springverb?

On macOS, you need macOS 13 Ventura or later, 64-bit only, with an Intel dual-core Mac at 2.4 GHz or higher or an M1 Mac. On Windows, you need Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit only, with an Intel Core 2 or comparable CPU at 2.4 GHz or higher. Both platforms need at least 4 GB of RAM, with 8 GB recommended, and a free iLok account is required for authorization.

What is the Freeze button for?

Freeze stops new input and holds the current reverb as an infinite tail until it is turned off. Kill cuts the input while letting the springs fade naturally, and if pressed during Freeze, it also turns Freeze off.
