01Overview

Speldosa comes from a collaboration between Klevgrand and Wintergatan (Martin Molin), who recorded the instrument himself and turned it into a playable digital plugin. The developer describes the project as an exploration of minimalism, where a simple melody on a music box can carry as much emotional weight as a larger arrangement. Wintergatan says the sound has been central to his work with the bands Detektivbyrån and Wintergatan. The plugin is available in VST2, AU and AAX formats for Windows and macOS.

Four Music Box Models and Room Settings

Speldosa includes four instrument models. The Modern model gives a fresh, clean music box tone. Vintage and Antique models sound more aged, and Eternal plays the music box in reverse.

Two room simulations place the instrument in a spatial context, and a separate space control adds more room when a single room is not enough. An algorithmic reverb handles the tail of each note.

A damper setting, added in version 1.0.3, gives extra tonal variation and changes how the notes ring.

Playing and Visual Feedback

The interface is intentionally simple, with the four models, room options and reverb all reachable without deep menus. The developer describes the design as focused on quick melodic writing.

A falling-stars display shows the notes you play as they sound. It is useful for following what you are playing when your volume is low or when you want a visual cue to help remember a melody.
