01Overview

Retro Keys 1 is a collection of three libraries built around vintage keyboards from the 1970s. It covers the Compac electric piano, the Orchestrator string and brass machine, and the Organ X-55 clonewheel. Wavesfactory describes the recreations as faithful to the sound, behavior and workflow of the original units, so producers can work with these classic timbres inside a modern Kontakt session. The library is delivered as a Kontakt instrument and needs the full version of Kontakt to run.

Three Vintage Keyboards in One Library

The Compac is an electric piano made by Crumar in 1972. This library includes its three piano sounds: piano, honky-tonk and clavichord.

The Orchestrator, also known as Multi-Man, was made by Crumar in 1975. It is a string machine with a brass simulator. The instrument covers bass, brass, piano, clavichord, violin and cello, with vibrato, envelope and presets.

The Organ X-55 is a clonewheel organ made by Elka. It has two keyboards with one drawbar each, three piano sounds, percussion, vibrato, brilliance, a rotator and tube drive, plus a set of presets.

Effects Chain and Settings

Retro Keys 1 includes an effect script that lets you insert the effect chain you want. Available effects include EQ, several compressor types, chorus, flanger and phaser modulation, distortion, saturation and tape emulation, algorithmic and convolutional reverb with more than 40 custom impulse responses, and amp simulators.

The settings page is divided into four sections. Round robin is handled with a neighbour-borrowing technique, since the original instruments always played the same sound for each key. Dynamic range sets the volume difference between the softest and loudest velocities, and the velocity curve controls how the library responds to incoming MIDI notes. A noise control adds the hiss and mechanical character of vintage equipment.
