01Overview

Boomwhackers is a percussion instrument built around lightweight, hollow, colour-coded plastic tubes tuned to musical pitches by length. The developer describes the tubes as producing musical tones when struck together or against nearly any surface. The library captures that sound across three octaves, with pitch shifting extending the range to five. It requires the full version of Native Instruments Kontakt 5.7.3 or later.

Sampled Tuned Percussion Sound and Character

Wavesfactory sampled the tubes struck on a rubber surface, covering the notes C2 to C5. The recordings were made in stereo in a dry studio environment using high-end microphones, preamps and converters.

Each note is built from 5 velocity layers and 5 round robin repetitions, which the developer includes to avoid a repetitive machine-gun effect. The samples were denoised and normalized to 0 dB so that hits feel more natural without sudden intensity jumps.

Settings for Round Robin, Dynamics and Players

The settings page offers control over dynamic range, which sets the difference between the loudest and quietest hits. A velocity curve controls how the instrument responds to incoming MIDI notes.

The player section adjusts how much randomness appears in the hits and how far the five players are spread across the stereo field. Start offset and envelope controls let you change where samples begin and the attack and decay times of each hit.
