01Overview

Quad Lim splits the signal into frequency bands and limits each band only when its level crosses the set threshold. Users can adjust time constants, makeup gain and the slope of the crossover filters, so dynamics control can be made broad or sharp. The developer says the band-splitting filters are designed to avoid artifacts or ringing at the crossover points. It is aimed at stereo bus processing and mastering-style finishing, especially for material whose level changes a lot over time, such as live recordings.

Best for

Frequency-Conscious Limiting on the Stereo Bus

Quad Lim applies limiting only to the parts of the spectrum that exceed their threshold. Because each band is handled separately, a loud low end or a harsh upper range can be controlled without pulling down the whole mix.

The filter slope control sets how broad or sharp the band division is. Gentler slopes give smoother, wider dynamics control, while steeper slopes keep the bands more separate.

The developer describes the crossover filters as transparent, with an emphasis on avoiding audible artifacts at the band edges.

Gain Structure and Master Brickwall Limiting

Time constants and makeup gain are user definable, which lets you match the band limiters to the material. Setting the gain structure of the band limiters carefully is the key to reaching higher loudness without distortion.

An optional master brickwall limiter follows the multiband stage. It is designed so the output cannot exceed 0 dBFS, regardless of how the band gains are set, which makes it useful as a final safety stage.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What is Quad Lim?

Quad Lim is a multiband limiting processor from IK Multimedia. It is the limiter version of Quad Comp and uses a fixed infinity-to-1 ratio in each band.

Which formats and operating systems does Quad Lim support?

Quad Lim is available in VST3, VST2, AU and AAX formats. Windows and macOS are supported, with 64-bit plug-in formats listed for both platforms.

What do I need to run Quad Lim?

On Mac, the minimum is an Apple M1 or Intel Core i5, 8 GB of RAM and macOS 10.15 or newer. On Windows, the minimum is a Core i5 or equivalent, 8 GB of RAM and Windows 10 64-bit or newer. Both need 9 GB of hard drive space. The EQual processor requires an OpenGL 2 compatible graphics adapter, and an internet connection is required for Custom Shop operations.

Can Quad Lim be used on a full mix?

Yes. The developer positions it as a finishing tool on the stereo bus, where it limits only the bands that exceed their thresholds.
