01Overview

Parallels is a software instrument from Softube that uses two independent sound sources, each playing pre-recorded multi-waveforms with a progression built in. Its sources can be blended in parallel, and each passes through its own filter section. Four modulation pods and a chain of five effects complete the signal path. The developer positions it as an instrument for scoring and soundscaping, with presets from artists including BT, Richard Devine and Inhalt.

Sound Sources and Wavescanning

Parallels is built around almost a hundred pre-recorded multi-waveforms, drawn from classic digital and analogue synths, hard-wired and modular instruments, FM and phase modulation sources, and environmental recordings. Each waveform is about 15 seconds long and contains a progression, such as a filter sweep or pitch diffusion.

Playback can start from any point in the waveform. The playhead moves through the source at a rate you choose before settling into a sustain loop. Each source runs up to seven voices, and both sources together can play up to fourteen voices. Blending the two sources gives you a wide range of combined timbres.

Filters, Modulation and Effects

Each source can pass through its own filter section. Three analogue-modelled filter types are available: a state-variable filter (low, high or band-pass), a vactrol-style low-pass gate, and a set of resonant peaks.

Four modulation pods can each be assigned one of five sources: LFO, random, Euclidean sequencer, step sequencer or envelope. They can modulate most parameters, and two pods can be paired to co-modulate a single parameter. Five three-knob effects run in sequence: distortion, chorus, flanger, delay and reverb. Each can be adjusted, modulated or bypassed.

Questions, answered

What formats does Parallels support?

Parallels is available in VST3, VST2, AU, AAX and RTAS formats. It runs on Windows and macOS as 64-bit software.

What do I need to run Parallels?

You need a computer with an AU, VST, VST3 or AAX-compatible DAW, a Softube account and an iLok account. macOS 11 to 13 or Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit) are supported, and Apple silicon runs natively.

Does Parallels support my DAW?

Softube officially tests Parallels in the latest versions of Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, Ableton Live, Studio One and Reaper. Other 64-bit VST, VST3, AU or AAX hosts should work if the system requirements are met, but they are not regularly tested. Softube recommends VST3.
