Sound and Character of the 1980s Poly Synth

Softube describes the original hardware as a six-voice synth that shaped a distinct 1980s sound. The plugin is meant to reproduce that character, including the unison phase behavior of the original, which lets you assign all six voices to one note.

The factory presets cover classic sounds and distorted bass patches, along with a set of artist presets that range from retro tones to crisp, wide leads.

Workflow, Controls and Modulation

The Model 84 panel is organized into sections for the oscillators, low-pass filter, LFO, envelope generator, glide and voice allocation. The VOICING section switches between Poly 1, Poly 2 and Unison modes.

Pitch and mod wheel assignment lets the keyboard wheels control pitch, filter and vibrato. Velocity and aftertouch can be applied to the amp, filter and pulse width, and extended unison mode adds control over sync and a more pronounced note attack.

Using Model 84 in Modular and Amp Room

Seven Model 84 modules are included for Softube Modular, so parts of the synth can be patched within a modular workflow alongside other Modular-ready gear such as Model 72.

The Chorus module is included for Softube Amp Room, where it can be used on guitar or bass sounds.
