01Overview

Softube modelled Model 72 from a 1972 hardware unit, keeping its quirks and non-linearities intact. The developer describes the sound as warm and smooth, with the same feedback and filter behavior found on the original. Beyond the instrument, the system adds software-only features such as a doubler, a stereo spread control and expanded oscillator options, and it works across instrument, effect, Amp Room and Modular contexts.

Sound Character and Original Hardware Behavior

Model 72 is based on a monophonic synthesizer from the early 1970s. Softube says the software components were measured and matched to a hardware unit, so the instrument keeps its non-linear behavior rather than an idealized version of the sound.

One hardware trick is reproduced: routing the high-gain output back into the external input creates a raw feedback tone. Softube added this behavior to the Model 72 Instrument plug-in, so it can be used directly without external patching.

Controls, Workflow and Software Additions

The tone generator has three oscillators. The top two are linked to incoming notes and share waveforms. The third can run free as a modulation source with an extended tuning range.

The filter is a voltage-controlled 4-pole low-pass with resonance. Two envelope generators shape filter content and amplitude. An LFO, a modulation wheel and a glide control handle movement. The doubler and stereo spread controls, added for the software version, let you duplicate played notes and widen them across the stereo field.
