01Overview

Oxford Envolution HDX is built around frequency-dependent control. Its transient and sustain sections can be adjusted independently, so you can change the envelope of drums, piano, guitar or any other percussive material. A tilt mode and a more parametric focus mode let you choose which frequencies are processed. The plugin can be inserted on a track, bus or master output, and its DIFF button lets you solo the effect for more extreme, creative results.

Best for

  • Drum presence and distance
  • Ambience bloom on recordings
  • Tight gating on percussion
  • Parallel drum processing
  • Negative ratio compression effects

Sound Shaping With Transients and Sustain

Envolution gives you separate transient and sustain controls, each applied per frequency. Boosting transients can add presence and a sense of distance to percussive sources. Boosting sustain can make the ambience of a recording bloom, while cutting it produces quick, precise gating.

The tilt mode works across a broad range of frequencies, while the focus mode behaves more like a parametric filter, letting you target a narrower band for processing.

Workflow, Parallel Use and Warmth Control

Envolution can be used in parallel without phase cancellation, so you can blend the processed signal with the dry signal. The DIFF button solos the effect, which helps you hear exactly what the processing is doing. Engaging DIFF is also the route to the negative ratio compression effects the developer highlights for creative use.

The warmth control adds harmonic saturation and tone shaping, and it helps prevent excessive output levels.
