01Overview

Oxford SuprEsser combines a straightforward de-esser with a frequency-specific dynamic EQ. A simple mode covers quick fixes, while an advanced mode gives full control over the dynamic EQ. A large FFT display shows where the problem frequencies sit, and three listen modes let you hear exactly what the plugin is treating. Because it can work across the full 20 Hz to 20 kHz range, it handles plosives and other low-frequency thuds as well as sibilance.

Best for

Sound Control and Frequency-Specific Compression

Rather than applying a fixed EQ cut to a whole channel, SuprEsser reduces only the frequency peaks that occur. Its compressor is based on an enhanced version of the compressor section from Sonnox's Oxford Dynamics plugin. Two linear phase crossover filters, modeled on those in the Oxford EQ, limit the compressor's reaction to the band you define.

By default, the plugin compresses only that narrow band, leaving the rest of the spectrum untouched. Selecting Wide lets the compressor react to specific frequencies while compressing the full band, or combine Band and Wide to set when the compressor reacts and what it compresses. Sonnox says this keeps the low end intact when treating vocals, so the voice does not end up thin or lisp-like.

A Wet/Dry blend control is available for final balancing.

Workflow: Finding and Treating Problem Frequencies

The large graphic display makes it straightforward to spot problem frequencies. It shows the threshold and peak hold levels of the user-definable band alongside an FFT view of the narrow band signal, including the frequency that holds the most energy.

To work quickly, define the frequency band, then lower the threshold fader until the gain reduction meter starts to respond. Automatic Level Tracking then adjusts the threshold as the signal level rises and falls, so the amount of gain reduction stays relative. This suits vocals where the singer is louder in the chorus than the verse. Turn the tracking off if you prefer a fixed threshold.

Questions, answered

What formats and operating systems does Oxford SuprEsser support?

Oxford SuprEsser is available in VST3, AU and AAX formats for Windows and macOS, and it is a 64-bit plugin.

What do I need to use Oxford SuprEsser?

You need a host that supports the plugin format you choose. Pro Tools 11 or later works with AAX, and any desktop application that supports Audio Unit or VST3 plugins can run the matching format. Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.12 or later are supported, and the plugin is activated through an iLok account, using either a physical iLok device or iLok Cloud.

Can Oxford SuprEsser remove plosives as well as sibilance?

Yes. Because it can operate across the full frequency range, Sonnox says it can treat low-end plosives and thuds from over-close vocal work without affecting nearby frequencies.
