01Overview

Oxford Envolution from Sonnox works on the envelope of a sound rather than its level alone. Its transient and sustain sections can be adjusted independently, and you can use a broader tilt mode or a more parametric-style focus mode to decide which frequencies get processed. It can sit on a single track, a bus or a master output. The developer also points to its more extreme side, such as using the DIFF button to create negative-ratio compression effects.

Transient and Sustain Control by Frequency

Envolution splits envelope shaping into transient and sustain sections, and both respond to frequency. That lets you target the attack of one band while leaving another band's decay alone.

Use the tilt mode for broad, musical changes across the spectrum. Switch to the focus mode when you need a narrower, more parametric-style target.

Boosting sustain can make the ambience around a recording bloom. Cutting it gives a tighter, more gated sound. Both approaches work on drums, piano and guitar, as well as other percussive material.

Parallel Use, DIFF and Warmth

Envolution can be used in parallel without phase cancellation, so you can blend the processed signal with the dry source. The DIFF button solos the effect, which helps when you are setting the shaping by ear.

The warmth control adds harmonic saturation and tone shaping, and it also helps prevent excessive output levels.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What is Oxford Envolution?

Oxford Envolution is an envelope shaper plugin from Sonnox. It processes transients and sustain separately, with frequency-dependent control.

What formats does Oxford Envolution support?

Oxford Envolution is available in VST3, AU and AAX formats. It runs on Windows and macOS, and is a 64-bit plugin.

What do I need to use Oxford Envolution?

You need a host that supports the plugin format you choose, such as Pro Tools 11 or later for AAX, or any desktop application that supports AU or VST3. Activation uses an iLok account with an iLok device or iLok Cloud.

What does the DIFF button do?

The DIFF button solos the effect, so you hear only the processed change. This is useful for setting the shaping and for creating more extreme effects such as negative-ratio compression.
