01Overview

Oxford Dynamics - HDX bundles six independent dynamics processes into a single plugin. Producers can use it for subtle control of a vocal or for a pumping side-chained effect, and the gate and expander handle fast gating and precise expansion. A warmth control adds optional tube-like harmonic saturation when a track needs extra presence. The plugin is built for Avid HDX systems, where its processing runs on the DSP rather than the host CPU.

Dynamics Processing and Character

The plugin offers three compressor types: Normal, Classic and Linear. The knee is variable, with settings from 0 dBr to -20 dBr in 5 dB steps, so the compression curve can be shaped from hard to soft.

The warmth control adds tube-like saturation for extra presence. Sonnox describes the processing as ultra-low in noise and distortion, and the dynamics section is taken from the Sony OXF-R3 console.

Workflow and Use Cases

Oxford Dynamics - HDX covers both track-level and bus-level work. A two-band side-chain EQ lets the detection signal be filtered before it drives the compressor or gate, which is useful for pumping effects and frequency-selective control.

A surround bus compressor and limiter is included, available on HDX only.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What formats does Oxford Dynamics - HDX support?

Oxford Dynamics - HDX is available in AAX format only.

What operating systems are supported?

The plugin runs on Windows 10 or later and on macOS 10.12 or later, including M1 Macs through Rosetta 2.

What do I need to use Oxford Dynamics - HDX?

It requires Pro Tools 11 or later with AAX Native and AAX DSP support, plus an iLok USB 2 or 3 key with the latest drivers or an iLok Cloud authorisation with an active internet connection. It is intended for Avid HDX systems; without one, Sonnox recommends the native version.

Is there a sound quality difference between the HDX and Standard versions?

Sonnox states there is no difference in sound quality between the Standard and HDX versions. The HDX version moves processing to the Avid DSPs to reduce load on the host processor.
