01Overview

Oxford Drum Gate 2 is Sonnox's second-generation drum gate, built to separate individual drum hits from the spill around them in multitrack recordings. The update targets common recording problems such as multiple microphones on one kit, where phase differences and bleed make drums harder to mix. It runs on Windows and macOS, and a trial is available so you can check it in your own session before committing.

Best for

  • Multi-mic drum recording
  • Drum alignment in mixing
  • Tom and snare gating
  • Triggered drum gating

Drum Detection, Alignment and Decay Control

The plugin's classification model identifies kick, snare, tom and hi-hat hits, and Sonnox says the detection is more accurate across a range of playing styles and recording conditions.

A new Align tab handles time, polarity and phase alignment for multi-mic kits. It groups tracks by name, shows visual feedback, and offers stereo linking for overheads and room mics, so you can align drum channels without a separate alignment tool.

The Adaptive Resonant Decay algorithm separates the ring of each hit from surrounding spill while leaving transients intact. Gain Reduction, Decay, High-Frequency Damping and high and low cutoffs for the resonant region can be adjusted independently. A Standard mode keeps the behaviour of Oxford Drum Gate 1 available.

Sidechain Triggering and Hit Clipping

The external sidechain input accepts audio or MIDI. Internal mode uses the plugin's own detection, External mode takes audio from another track or audio key spikes, and MIDI mode triggers on Note On messages with selectable channel and note. An All Transients mode passes every transient above the threshold without using the classification models.

Hit Clip works on each hit's post-leveller peak level, so soft and loud hits are shaped to a ceiling that suits them. Separate Soft Hits and Loud Hits amounts let you tune the transient shaping, and automatic make-up gain keeps the perceived level steady.
