01Overview

Gates Bundle brings two gating tools into Slate Digital's Virtual Mix Rack, so you can gate sources without leaving the rack. Gate: Classic is built for removing background noise from guitars, vocals and acoustically recorded sources. Gate: Drums takes a different approach, triggering on transients rather than volume, which lets you separate attacks from room tails and reduce bleed between drum microphones.

Best for

  • Vocal noise reduction
  • Guitar cleanup
  • Acoustic source gating
  • Drum bleed reduction
  • Tight drum tracks
  • Creative sidechain gating

Gate: Classic for Vocals, Guitars and Acoustic Sources

Gate: Classic is a traditional gate with threshold, ratio, range, attack, release and slope controls. It offers two detection modes. Classic mode detects based on signal amplitude alone, and the input can be filtered with highpass and lowpass filters before detection. Vocal mode adds internal filtering that better tracks a singer's natural breathing, along with a timing circuit that smooths how the gate opens and closes.

The module also includes sidechain highpass and lowpass filters. Use them to remove rumble or hiss, or to make the gate respond only to a chosen frequency range for more creative results across a mix.

Gate: Drums and Transient-Based Gating

Gate: Drums is triggered by sharp and soft transients instead of volume levels. Its workflow runs in three stages. Transient Detection sets which attacks the gate catches. The Gate stage adjusts the floor and timing. Debleed filters the tail after a transient is caught, and its release control sets how quickly those filters activate.

Detection filters let the gate react only to certain frequencies, and a detection threshold lets you focus on a specific amplitude range. Because transients and tails can be processed separately, you can clean up drum tracks more precisely than with a conventional gate.
