01Overview

Newmello Collection is built around the Mellotron M400, the tape-based keyboard used on many classic recordings from the 1960s and 1970s. Rather than sampling an original unit, Wavesfactory recreated how the instrument works and sounds by sampling 75 custom instruments onto cassette tape. The result is a lo-fi character meant to evoke that era, with a built-in effects script for shaping each sound further.

Tape Character and Main Controls

The main view gives you control over the background noise of the tape that plays under the samples. A tape blend slider morphs between two different tape decks, so you can shift the character of the same patch. Attack and release times are adjustable, and a tilt-style EQ lets you tweak the tone of the instrument.

The 75 patches can be selected from the screen display or browsed with your keyboard, which keeps patch changes fast during writing and performance.

Effects Chain and Sound Shaping

Newmello includes an effects script that lets you place effects in any order. Available processing includes high-quality EQ, several types of compressors, chorus, flanger and phaser modulation, distortion, saturation and tape emulation, amp simulators, and both algorithmic and convolution reverb. The reverb section uses more than 40 custom impulse responses.

The patch library spans strings, woodwinds, brass, keys, guitars, plucked and mallet instruments, choirs and synth waveforms, so the effects chain can be applied across a wide range of parts.

What do I need to use Newmello Collection?

Newmello Collection requires the full version of Native Instruments Kontakt 5.7.3 or above. It will only run in demo mode in the free Kontakt Player.

Is Newmello Collection a sampled Mellotron?
