01Overview

MUM M8 DSP is built around the filter used in the Akai S950, a 12-bit sampler that many producers still associate with a smooth, warm low-pass sound. The plugin also draws on the developer's MUM M8 Eurorack module, which uses a similar filter design. Beyond the core filter, it adds resonance, gain, clipped overdrive and a bit depth control, so it can move from clean smoothing to gritty, squealing tones within one device.

Filter Character and Resonance

The core is a low-pass filter that ALM / Busy Circuits describes as smooth and vacuum-like, a quality it says works well on complex source material. Resonance and gain controls let you push the filter toward more aggressive territory. The developer notes that the resonance is intentionally aggressive and can self-oscillate, producing acidic squeals and a grittier sound.

Clipped overdrive and saturation add further edge, so the filter can be driven hard as well as used for gentle shaping.

Clock Bleed and Bit Depth Controls

Two features set MUM M8 DSP apart from a standard filter. The clock bleed switch introduces audible artifacts into the filter path, reproducing some quirks of the original hardware.

The bit depth control downsamples the input for a more character-rich output. Used together with the filter and saturation, it lets you shape lo-fi, sampler-style textures inside your DAW.
