01Overview

Rubicon is an analog VCO design originally created by Dave Dixon with Intellijel, and this add-on brings it into Softube Modular as a virtual module. The developer positions it as a strong option for experimenting with frequency modulation, and its thru-zero FM is central to that role. The module can switch between linear and exponential TZFM, and it offers a range of waveforms and sync options. It does not run on its own: Softube Modular must be installed first.

Thru-Zero FM and Core Oscillator Behavior

The core of Rubicon is a high precision emulated triangle oscillator. Its thru-zero frequency modulation can be switched between linear and exponential modes, with a linear index VCA for dynamic control of modulation depth. Softube notes that the exponential TZFM option is a first for any module of this kind.

Symmetry control runs from normal at full clockwise, through centered where the VCO sits at 0 Hz, to reversed waveforms at full counter-clockwise, and it accepts CV. Pulse-width modulation and exponential FM each have dedicated attenuators.

Waveforms, Sync and Suboctaves

Rubicon provides 12 primary waveform types, including sine, sigmoid, double sigmoid, triangle, saw, double saw, zigzag, square, and three pulse variants. A suboctave circuit adds outputs at -1 and -2 octaves, and those outputs respond to FM in the same way as the main signals.

For sync, soft sync (also called reversing sync) comes with an attenuator, and hard sync offers a selectable reset direction. That setting controls whether the triangle starts moving up or down after a reset, which the developer notes is especially useful in LFO mode.

Softube Modular is required to run this add-on.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What do I need to use Intellijel Rubicon?

Rubicon is an expansion for Softube Modular, so Softube Modular must be installed and running. The developer also notes that the latest iLok License Manager should be used, and the software requires a Softube account and an iLok account.

Which formats and operating systems does it support?

It is available in VST3, VST2, AU, AAX and RTAS formats. It runs on Windows and macOS, in 64-bit. Softube recommends VST3 because some of its plug-ins have features that are not present in the older VST format.

Which DAWs has Softube officially tested it with?

Softube says it officially tests its plug-ins in the most recent versions of Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, Ableton Live, Studio One and Reaper. Other 64-bit VST, VST3, AU or AAX hosts should work if the system requirements are met, but they are not tested regularly.

What is thru-zero FM?

Thru-zero FM lets the modulating signal pass through zero frequency, which allows the sound to reverse direction in a way that standard FM does not. Rubicon offers both linear and exponential versions of this modulation.
