01Overview

JJP Drums is a drum effects plugin from Waves, designed by Grammy winner Jack Joseph Puig. Rather than building a drum sound from scratch, it processes snare, kick and toms with optimizations for each drum type. The interface is streamlined and the default settings are chosen to get a usable result quickly, whether the drums are acoustic, sampled or synthesized. It ships with 30 presets covering a range of radio-ready sounds.

Snare, Kick and Tom Processing

The plugin includes separate optimizations for top and bottom snare miking, so each mic source can be shaped for its own role in the sound.

For kicks, you can process two sources at once: a close mic and a second, more distant mic. Kick sustain can be increased and a subharmonic can be added for extra depth. Waves describes the kick processing as well suited to EDM and hip-hop kicks.

The toms are aimed at round, big, fat sounds, with reverb designed to suit toms. A gate can cut ringing or be used for 80s-style gated drum effects.

Parallel Processing and Workflow

JJP Drums uses parallel processing, which Waves says enhances the sound while keeping the character of the original drum. Because the controls are streamlined, the plugin is aimed at producers who want focused drum sounds without a long setup.

Waves positions JJP Drums as a companion to its JJP Cymbals and Percussion plugin.
