Instant Flanger Mk II is a flanger plugin from Eventide that emulates the 1975 Instant Flanger studio rackmount. It offers VST3, VST2, AU and AAX formats for Windows and macOS.
Instant Flanger Mk II is built around the sound of vintage tape flanging. Eventide describes it as an authentic emulation of the original 1975 studio rackmount, a unit it says was used on David Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes" and Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." The plugin covers stereo sweetening, subtle modulation, double-tracking and more extreme flanging effects, with controls for depth, mode, modulation source and tape-style bounce.
The Mode switch selects Shallow, Deep or Wide flanging. Eventide says the dual outputs create three distinct sonic images, and that Wide mode combined with the Low Cut control is a quick way to place harmonies behind a lead.
Depth sets the intensity of the effect. At 100%, the delayed signal is added to the dry signal. At -100%, the dry signal is subtracted from the delayed signal. Feedback and Depth together shape the resonance of the flange.
The Oscillator drives the flanging at a user-defined rate, with Sync and Retrig for control of its timing. The Envelope Follower moves the flanging with the input's amplitude, and Side Chain lets that follower be triggered from any other source in the mix.
Manual control lets you set the comb effect with the Big Knob, and Remote assigns the flanging to a mod wheel. The Bounce control imitates the capstan motor of a tape machine hunting for speed after a thumb is lifted from the flange, which Eventide says adds a real-world groove.
